Okay, I have to say what has never been said before.
This is gonna hurt.
Ready..?
“Your clinician is not your Nanny..”
Take it in. .. There it is…
When we have clinicians that come to our home, I’ve experienced many parents try and make grocery store runs, try to accomplish some mid day shopping and even some “ I’m going to get some ice cream” runs.
Can parents stay productive while instruction is going on? Sure! I have nothing against parents who use therapy time to prioritize household needs.
But, the truth is parents should be more aware of whats happening in sessions because it demonstrates tools that may help when your child is having trouble requesting and item or understanding a demand outside of session times. Watching sessions is important for validation of services. When your clinicians cancels or when family vacations come along, you want to be able to look at your situation and think ” what would __ do”. Services aren’t just for the child, its for you too.
Our goal as clinicians is that our clients grow to need services less and less. That they develop skills that will teach them to independently make decisions, problem solve come communicate their needs whenever they need it wherever they are.
I live by the motto… “That it works better, when we work together”
You have the skills and you have the tools. YOU CAN DO IT.
